Displacement
This sculpture was built from discarded floorboards. Assembled into the shape of a bench, which has the appearance of a white picket fence. This. was to call on the expression and phenomena of NYMBism (Not In My Backyard), featuring exaggeratedly spiked beams that line the back of the bench as well as throughout what should be the seat of the bench. This is a reference to hostile architecture and the way that it targets houseless individuals and keeps them from basic human comforts. This happens constantly in front of our eyes, but sometimes it is hard to see for those of us who do not interact with the world in the same way. This sculpture was installed publicly on the UC Berkeley campus. The artist documented the interactions, or lack thereof. This is significant because just like pieces of hostile architecture or houseless people themselves, people ignore what is difficult, uncomfortable, or inconvenient.
